About Port of Le Havre

Located in the deep-sea port, this integrated chemical platform gathers major industrials of base and specialty chemicals. Thus, it is a major refining and chemical complex in Europe. This area is strategic for the supply chain with direct access to the multimodal connexions (sea, rail, barge, pipe, road) and easy access to utility networks.

The Port of Le Havre

Le Havre gathers an important part of these activities as a European-scale refinery integrated with a European-scale petrochemical complex, 7 chemical plants (fertilizers, 2 worldwide scale additives plants, solvents, plastics, biofuels, rubber, etc.)

Economic size of le Havre's chemical activities

A total of 38,800 employees on the industrial platform and 2050 sites. The chemistry activity represents:
Chemicals (mineral and organic chemistry, plastic, additives & lubricants, fertilizers ): 5,436 jobs
Rubber : 2,381 jobs
Refining & Coking: 2,970 jobs

Area

Total 10000.0 hectare
Free 100.0 hectare

The platform has available lands to welcome new chemical activities/investments/plants

Services

Logistics

Facilities for the storage and transportation of chemical products are provided by several companies: rubis Terminal, dmS (dCa-mory Shipp), lBC Group, Nor- gal, GCa Storage, lohéac, derijke, hoyer, den hartogh, TransEuroChem ...

The Belgian logistics supplier Katoen Natie has established bases in the Le Havre Port-Jérôme areas to manage the Total Petrochemicals and ExxonMobil chemical platforms. Sea, river, road-tanker and rail- tanker terminals offer long and short-term storages, reception and redelivery of raw chemicals for import/export and inland traffic.

Le Havre industrial port offers storages, handling and distribution facilities. The port has eleven piers (terminals), which are equipped to handle up to 550,000 dwt super-tankers. Pipelines from the refineries in Normandy and the Paris area are linked to the terminals. The petroleum products storage capacity in le Havre is greater than 6,000,000 cu.m.

  • Crude oil and refined products storage 5,700,000 cubic meters
  • Motor fuels, heavy fuels and bunkers provides storage of 350,000 cubic meters .
  • Chemicals and petrochemicals: hazardous cargoes providing 60,000 cubic meters worth of storage.
  • Non hazardous liquids 105,000 cubic meters.
  • Liquefied petroleum gases 60,000 cubic meters
  • Distribution and storage of hazardous products 10,800 metric tons and 3,600 square foot facitity.

All these companies offer other services such as deballasting and degasing in cleaning stations, bunkering possibility, additivation and blending and are authorized by French customs to complete operations with free trade facilities.

Training and research

More than 2,600 corporate researchers, 800 academic researchers in Rouen, Caen and Le Havre universities. 1,500 skilled technicians work in the oil and chemical industry.
Four high engineering schools with R&D laboratories and training programmes in Chemical Engineering, Materials and Plastic Processing:

  • iNSa (National Institute of Applied Sciences) in Rouen
  • ENSiCaEN (High Engineering School) in Caen
  • iSPa (Alençon Plastics Superior Institute) and iSmO (Higher Institute for Mould Technology) in Alençon
  • ENSPm (IFP training) in Rouen and Lillebonne: training of managerial, engineering and technical staff from the oil, gas, petrochemical, and chemical industries

International corporate research centers:

  • arkema/Cerdato (for engineered polymers)
  • Exxonmobil,
  • CreG Total (oil & refining, BTL “Bio- mass to Liquids).

Utilities

Power  (400 kV)
Steam (shared supply of steam with two operators on the area) – 200 000 t/yr – Bars – 5 industrials connected – 4km of network – additional 10km steam network in project.
Natural Gas : up to 40 bars, all the industrial area is connected
Industrial Gases : nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide

Disposal

Effluent management

Industrial waste effluents are treated by a number of specialized companies: Ecohuile, Sedibex, Scori/Teris, Serep, Scoredi, Sarp Onyx, Sonolub, Citron, etc.
SEDIBEX: biggest european hazardous waste treatment plant with energy recovery (Steam)
Polluted industrial water treatment (SEREP).
The handling of hazardous products is operated on specialized platforms: Care in Le Havre.

Refinery

TOTAL refining and chemical platform:

Capacity: 12,2 million tons/annum & 240,000 bbl/day provisioning 12% of French fuel market
European-scale petrochemical complex (525 kt of ethylene per year/ 400 kt/yr of plastic pellets) – 2nd biggest French ethylene production / 15% of French plastic production/ 13% of the European styrene production (last French styrene plant)

A highly developed transport infrastructure and a skilled labor force help to create a dynamic industry. A wide range of production facilities are established locally: oil refining, basic and intermediate petrochemicals, fine chemicals and speciality products.
