Construction of Fintoil Bio Refinery in HaminaKotka, Finland

At a glance

The Fintoil refinery is being constructed in the Port of HaminaKotka in Finland, with a focus on logistics and transportation connections. The refinery will use fractional distillation, a process developed in 1913 by Finnish chemist Alfons Hellström, to produce renewable fuels and other sustainable products. The plant is set to start operations in the summer of 2022 with a feed capacity of 200,000 tons of crude tall oil, making it the third largest crude tall oil refiner with a 10% market share. The technologically advanced production process is provided by Neste Engineering Solutions.

The construction of the Fintoil refinery began in early 2021 in the Port of HaminaKotka, a chemicals port in Hamina, Finland. The port has a huge container terminal and is conveniently specialized in the handling and storage of different liquids.

Special attention has been paid to logistics and transportation connections: Fintoil has access to an electrified rail connection, loading docks go as far as the eye can see, and a motorway runs right next to the port.

The production process of the refinery is based on fractional distillation, in which heat energy and negative pressure are used to distil the raw material to its constituents, separating the wanted fractions. The process was developed already in 1913 by the famous Finnish chemist Alfons Hellström in the nearby Enso-Gutzeit plants in Kotka, a stone’s throw from Fintoil’s refinery. Alfons’s legacy is coming home.

Two thirds of the production will be geared towards renewable fuels and the remaining third towards other sustainable, renewable products.

Our plant will start operations in the summer of 2022 with a feed capacity of 200.000 tons of crude tall oil. Fintoil will be the third largest crude tall oil refiner with a market share of 10 %. We are prepared and able to increase feed capacity in the future.

The technologically advanced and energy-friendly production process is delivered by Neste Engineering Solutions. This close cooperation gives Fintoil access to NEXPINUS™ technology which is tailored for the production of second-generation renewable bio diesel.
