Bayer commences production of anti-parasitic drug for pets at its Langreo, Spain factory

At a glance

Pharmaceutical multinational, Lada, is expanding its production line at its facilities in Langreo, Asturias. The company already produces acetylsalicylic acid, a raw material for Aspirin, as well as a metabolic stimulant and a treatment for fungal infection. Lada has obtained permits to implement a new production line for veterinary use, specifically for an anti-parasitic drug for pets. The company plans to produce the entire volume of this drug at the Asturian plant, which currently supplies acetylsalicylic acid to other facilities. The expansion is expected to increase production by six tonnes in one year.

It is the fourth production line at the Lada facilities, where the pharmaceutical multinational produces acetylsalicylic acid, the raw material of Aspirin, along with a metabolic stimulant and a treatment for fungal infection.

The plant at Lada, in Langreo, already has the permits it needs to implement a new production line, this time, for veterinary uses. It is to produce an active ingredient of an anti-parasitic drug for pets (imidacloprid), which is commercialised under the name of Advantix, with the aim of eliminating fleas and ticks on pets, as well as repelling sand flies, the insect that transmits canine leishmaniasis.

The multinational envisages that the entire production of this anti-parasitic drug will be made at the Asturian plant. The factory currently provides the company’s other facilities with acetylsalicylic acid, needed to produce the famous Aspirin. The company envisages an increase of six tonnes in the volume of production of the drug for pets in one year, making the most of the equipment already available in the multi-use plant that is used for butafosfan, a metabolism stimulant used in veterinary practices, and which is already produced in Langreo.

The Lada factory currently has three production sections: salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid and multi-use (clotrimazole and butafosfan). It is one of the German multinational’s benchmark centres on an international scale.
