Sustainable further development of BASF's Lemförde site
07/04/2017BASF Polyurethanes GmbH initiated a new growth phase under the keyword "Lemförde 2025" at Lemförde. In this center for polyurethane specialties, a further production line for thermoplastic polyurethane and a new dispatch hall are being built. In addition, BASF is carrying out accompanying infrastructure measures. Overall, the construction work will take roughly two years; The investment sum reaches an average double-digit million figure.
"With this sustainable development, we are strengthening Lemförde as a global competence center for polyurethane specialties," explains Christiane Sajdak, Managing Director of BASF Polyurethanes GmbH. "The projects are a visible sign of the future orientation and importance of the location and a positive signal for the region, for our employees and for our customers."
The production line for thermoplastic polyurethane under the brand name Elastollan® expands the already existing production complex. It is the largest individual investment ever made by BASF at the Lemförde site. The imposing new building will be erected directly at the existing production hall. The total area of 8,600 square meters covers production, storage, tanks, silos and office space. The completion of the new building and the commencement of production are scheduled for the end of 2018.
The second investment at Lemförde is a new dispatch and picking hall. It supports the operating logistics for the significantly growing quantities of plastic finished products. The building, which is built in modular construction, has an area of 1,200 sqm and a floor space of 15,000 m³. Commissioning is scheduled for mid-2018. Process handling and later operation are carried out by the existing logistics staff. "The new building also contributes to greater security at the site," Sajdak said. "The number of truck journeys in the factory and in the region is reduced."
The accompanying infrastructure measures include modifications to the employee and truck parking area, the construction of a further rainwater retention basin, and measures to improve internal factory traffic.
All construction works are carried out by regional companies. In order to be able to handle the construction traffic safely and purposefully, the northern entrance of the secondary road "In den Kämpen" was closed for public transit traffic for around two years of construction activities in coordination with the authorities.
